Shannon Michelle Dunbar – Director/Vice Principle
About Shannon Michelle Dunbar
I started my dancing career at DANCE ZONE at the tender age of 6 and over the course of many years I was trained by Genetia King, Michelle Poxon, Cindy Foggit, Sam Kotze and Lauren Sturrock. I completed all my amateur exams with honours right from Pre-Bronze through to Emerald Star (2009).
At the age of 12, I started competing nationally as well as internationally and worked my way up to Championship status in various genres such as Freestyle, Slowdance as well as Disco. In 2005, I took part in the British Freestyle Open Championships, achieving intermediate finals in Freestyle Duos as well as Slowdance. Throughout the years of 2008-2011 I started working my way up the Championship ladder and placed between 2nd and 4th on numerous occassions for Freestyle as well as Slowdance. In 2012 and 2013, I started venturing more into the Disco field – competing competitively in Disco Duos as well as Disco Small Group.
From 2011-2013, I completed my undergraduate degree in (Bachelor of Art) Marketing Communication with a second major of Psychology (predominantly focusing on the human mind and body). After my 3 years, I was given an award for outstanding performance and dedication as I passed my undergraduate degree with ‘Cum Laude’ (this means all subjects where passed in all 3 years with distinctions, therefore making my overall pass a distinction).
During these years, I completed my Dance Mouse teaching course through Dance Zone and was teaching dancing part time. In 2014, I decided to move away from my passion for dance to persue my passion to make a difference in the corporate world. While working, I completed my second degree, a post-graduate degree, Honours (Bachelor of Art) in Strategic Communication predominantly focusing on Branding and Marketing as well as understanding the human mind and body.
In 2015, I was still in a “low end” role job but my potential was noticed and I worked myself up from the lowest paid department to the highest paid department in an international company within a span of 2 months – thus becoming a Client Account Specialist in the field of skincare and make-up. At the end of 2016, my enthusiasm for dance grew ever stronger and I felt the need to return to my active, social as well as physical and mental passion for dance.
I believe what I have learnt in the corporate world has only made me stronger, more focused and more determined on what makes me happy and I can honestly say that the lessons learnt will definitely filter through into the dancing world – both from a corporate as well as teaching perspective.
